THE FAIR HOUSING ACT
PROHIBITS DISCRIMINATION IN HOUSING

  • Race or Color
  • National Origin
  • Religion
  • Handicap or Disability
  • Sex
  • Familial Status
According to a 2004 Housing Trends Report, 3.7 million instances of housing discrimination occur annually.
"We are a nation of unlimited opportunity and serious unsolved social ills, and we are all in it together. Racial re-segregation can only lead to social disintegration. Far better to resume the dream of Martin Luther King Jr.: to build a nation where Whites and Blacks sit side by side at the table of brotherhood."  -- Colin Powell

SUPPORTING FAIR HOUSING THROUGH
COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION & OUTREACH

Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments (WRCOG) is dedicated to promoting non-discrimination and ensuring fair and equal housing opportunities for all. In an ongoing effort to provide education & outreach to affirmatively further fair housing in the Region, WCROG provides programming and services to non-profits, faith and community based organizations, social services providers, housing industry professionals, business leaders, and citizens.
The Federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap or familial status.
  • Housing discrimination is a national problem that affects millions of people each year.
  • Housing choice plays a crucial role in determining one’s ability to access critical societal and economic opportunities: quality schools, jobs, health care services, recreational facilities, public services, and transportation.
Rental Market
In the rental of housing, it is unlawful to discriminate against an individual who is protected under the law, which includes: refusal to rent, setting different terms or conditions, giving false information, or limiting preference in advertising.
Sales Market
In the sale of housing unlawful acts include: refusal to negotiate, setting different terms or conditions, giving false information, limiting choice, or stating a preference in advertising.

Conditions
In certain conditions housing choice can be limited. People with disabilities can expect reasonable accommodations; however these depend on numerous factors. Some communities that have been designated as senior communities can discriminate based on age or familial status. Some religious communities can give preference to adherents of that faith so long as no other discrimination is present.
